Beyond the Degree: Why the "Making of Persons" is the Future of Education

We aren't just training workers; we are forming humans who lead with a different spirit.

"𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙨𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 '𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙩?' 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 '𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙚, 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣?' 𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨." When Arthur Holmes wrote these words in 1975, the world looked very different. But 50 years later, the core tension remains. In a modern job market that treats degrees like vending machines: put in four years, get out a career. We focus so much on the "doing" that we forget about the becoming. At Silvertree, we believe that if your education is only about what you can do, you are left stranded when the market shifts. But if it’s about who you are, you are never stranded. A person who is empathetic, curious, and resilient can navigate any crisis. We are moving past the traditional model to focus on the formation of the soul through three distinct pillars: → 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: A space to discuss life, ethics, and growth. → 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: High-stakes internships in Nairobi, New York, and Cape Town. → 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Learning that leadership starts with community and hospitality. Our goal is for a CEO to see Silvertree on a resume and think, "This is a person I can trust. This is a person who knows how to learn." We aren't just training workers; we are forming humans who lead with a different spirit. One that prioritises people over profits and wisdom over mere information. Education is a transformation, not a transaction. Join us on this journey of making people.

In the modern job market, the standard question a prospective student asks is, "What can I do with this degree?" And it's a fair question. We live in an era of rising tuition and shifting economic landscapes. We want a return on our investment. But at Silvertree, we believe that if that is the only question we are asking, we have already lost the plot.

Arthur Holmes, the late Wheaton professor, famously challenged this utilitarian view in The Idea of a Christian College:

"The question to ask about an education is not 'What can I do with it?' but rather 'What is it doing to me, as a person?' Education has to do with the making of persons."

At Silvertree, this isn't just a nice quote to hang on a wall. It is our North Star. We are building an educational ecosystem that doesn't just produce workers. It forms humans.

The Crisis of Utility

For decades, higher education has been treated like a vending machine. You put in four years and a sum of money, and out pops a career. But careers today are fluid. The skills you learn in year one may be obsolete by year four. If your education was only about "what you can do," you are left stranded when the "doing" changes.

If education is about who you are becoming, though, you are never stranded. A person who is empathetic, curious and resilient can navigate any market shift. Our vision is to move past the academic factory model and return to the heart of the matter, the formation of the soul.

Learning to Sit in the Tension

One of the most overlooked qualities in modern education is the willingness to not know. In a culture that rewards instant answers and quick fixes, the discomfort of ignorance is often seen as failure. At Silvertree, we see it differently.

We are all on a journey of seeking and knocking. Real learning, the kind that shapes a person, happens when you sit in the tension of not understanding and refuse to take a shortcut. That discomfort is not a bug in the process. It is the process. By embracing it, our students develop the grit and intellectual humility required to eventually find, not just the right answers, but the right questions.

This is what separates a trained worker from a formed person. A trained worker needs the answer handed to them. A formed person knows how to pursue it.

The Silvertree Persona: Faithful, Present and Empathetic

If we succeed in our mission, what does a Silvertree graduate look like?

They are not just the person with the highest marks or grades. They are the faithful and reliable worker. They are present, in a world of digital distraction they know how to look a colleague in the eye. They listen well, valuing the person across the table more than the point they are trying to make. They are empathetic, caring about the human cost of a business decision.

Ultimately, we want our students to embody what it means to function in the image of their Creator. Whether they are coding in Nairobi, analysing data in New York, or managing a team in Cape Town, they carry a sense of purpose that transcends their job description.

The "How": Knowledge Infused with Experience

Transformation doesn't happen in a vacuum. You cannot lecture someone into becoming a person of character. It requires a thick experience where academic knowledge meets lived reality. We facilitate this through three distinct pillars.

The Power of Mentoring. Every week, our students sit down with Silvertree staff for dedicated mentoring. This is not a tutoring session about grades. It is a space to discuss life, ethics and growth. It is where the making of the person happens in real time, through the guidance of those who have walked the path before them.

Global Work Exposure. We don't believe in ivory towers. Our students participate in three-month paid internships with world-class partners in South Africa, the USA and Kenya. By working in diverse global markets, they learn that the making of a person requires cultural intelligence and the ability to solve problems in high-stakes, real-world environments.

The Host Family Experience. Perhaps the most unique aspect of our model is the living arrangement. During their internships, students live with host families. Why? Because leadership is not just about how you act in a boardroom. It is about how you participate in a community. Living with a family allows students to develop a Biblical understanding of family life, hospitality, and the quiet responsibilities that anchor a healthy society.

Becoming the Employer of Choice

Our ambition is bold. We want Silvertree to be the employer of choice for the world's top companies.

When a CEO sees "Silvertree" on a resume, we want them to think, "This person is not just a great engineer or analyst or manager. This is a person I can trust. This is a person who will care for my team. This is a person who knows how to learn."

We are looking for partners and employers who realise that the most valuable asset in the 21st century is not a specific technical skill. It is a well-formed human being.

A Future Led by Formed Students

We see a future where Silvertree graduates are not just filling seats in industries, they are leading them. They will be the CEOs, the innovators, and the community leaders who lead with a different spirit, one that prioritises people over profits and wisdom over mere information.

Education is more than a transaction. It is a transformation. We are seeking, we are knocking, and we invite you to join us on this journey of making people
